International Schools in Singapore
By Everlyn Lee

Finding an international school in Singapore for your child is easier than you may expect it to be, thanks to the wide range of options available.

If you have children, relocating to Singapore will most likely involve having to find a suitable school for them. Thankfully, there are many international schools here, and they usually follow the curriculum of their native countries and have classes catered for different age groups. This means that choosing a school which fits the needs of you and your children should not be too much of a hassle.

The following is a list of some international schools that you can consider enrolling your child in:

United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA)
Opened in 1971, the UWCSEA is the largest of the 12 non-profit colleges around the world which forms the United World College movement, with around 2,900 students from as many as 63 countries.

The UWCSEA educates students from ages 4 to 18. The four schools in the College are the Primary School, Middle School, High School and Upper School. The Primary School is authorised to teach the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP); the Middle School continues the PYP learner profile. In Grades 9 and 10, students study for either the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) or the Grade 10 Foundation IB programme and during the final two years of College, the vast majority of students prepares for an IB Diploma.

The college is one of the world's largest IB Diploma schools and for 25 years has achieved superb exam results. However, the school is also known for placing equal emphasis on character development: students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities which include sports, music, drama and social service options; all IB students join at least one out of more than 30 Singapore-based social service projects; students are educated about global issues through the Global Concerns programme; and from Grade 3 onwards, all students participate in an annual class expedition outside of Singapore as part of the curriculum.

The UWCSEA occupies a campus of over 11 hectares and is wll-equipped with specialist facilities which allow a wide range of educational activities. Due to strong demand for its places despite fees averaging S$20,000 a year, a second campus is being set up in the east side of Singapore. The College also has exclusive access to a centre on a Malaysian island which offers opportunities for camping, sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, mountain biking and orienteering.

Tanglin Trust School (TTS)
The TTS has roots that go as far back as 1925 and teaches a British-based curriculum (National Curriculum of England and Wales). Students sit for the National Curriculum Tests that are compiled and published by England's Qualifications and Curriculum Authority at the end of Year 2, Year 6 and Year 9. The Authority also oversees the GCSE examinations taken in Year 11 and the ‘A' Level examinations taken in Year 13. Many students go on to study at UK universities. In 2006, The Guardian newspaper named the school as one of the best UK-curriculum international schools in the world.

The school has around 2,000 students from 40 different nationalities aged between 3 and 18 in its Infant, Junior and Senior Schools, even though a majority of them hails from the UK. A vast majority of teachers are British, thereby giving the school a predominantly British feel. Students must be fluent in English to be accepted into the school and its tuition fee ranges from S$4,275 to S$7,775 per term.

The TTS has an excellent academic reputation and a strong emphasis on sports and performing arts, with well-established choirs, orchestras and concerts. Its new six-storey Sports and Performing Arts building will provide further opportunities for inspiring performances. Students can also take part in a wide array of interesting lunch-time and after-school activities, co-curricular activities and field study trips to enrich their learning experience.

Singapore American School (SAS)
Established in 1956, the SAS offers an American-based curriculum for approximately 3,800 students from preschool through grade 12, making it the largest international school in the world. Approximately 60% of the students are American citizens, with the rest comprising over 50 different nationalities. The school is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

The 37-acre campus includes four distinct divisions, namely the Primary School, Intermediate School, Middle School and High School as well as a purpose-built Early Childhood Center which provides a special learning environment for preschool and pre-kindergarten students. Annual tuition fees range from S$10,300 to S$24,400, depending on which division the student is in.

The SAS has the largest number of high school students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses of any international school in the world. The programme offers students the opportunity to gain American college credits while in high school.

As one of the six international schools that make up the Interscholastic Association of Southeast Asian Schools (IASAS), it competes regularly with its other members in both academic and sports events so students are able to interact with their peers from around the region. Most notably, the school has been performing consistently well in sporting events and is well-known for its strong athletic tradition.

The interim semester programme is also in place to assure students of a well-balanced education. For one week during the second semester, all regularly-scheduled high school courses cease while students and teachers select their desired course from a wide variety of activities conducted in Singapore, Asia, Australia and Europe to participate in; for instance, trekking in the Himalayas of Nepal, scuba diving in the Maldives, camping in Australia and traveling the Silk Road through China.

The CNIS aims to combine both Eastern and Western philosophies of education and strives to produce effectively bilingual students.
